Delivery status of the Volla Phone Quintus and Volla Tablets

With 10 new products, including our new flagship model and the first Volla tablet, 2024 is an especially exciting year. We are looking forward to starting shipping the Volla Phone Quintus this month. We will start with the rewards for our Kickstarter crowd funding campaign supporters. All pre-orders will follow in the order in which they were received. We expect to start shipping the tablet in November.

With the completion of the operating system Volla OS 14 for the Volla Phone Quintus, the last production steps can begin: the application of the software, packaging and sealing. The smartphones then begin their journey to our customers.

One week after we started applying Volla OS, we will start applying Ubuntu Touch. There is a very advanced version candidate of the operating system for the Volla Phone Quintus. Our Ubuntu Touch team is working on the elimination of last errors.

At the moment, the packaging, operating instructions and seals are still in production. We expect delivery in the coming week. As part of the expansion of our own manufacturing capacities, we have introduced a workstation for the industrial application of the software at our location.

DELIVERY for pre-orders from our online shop and Indiegogo is therefore not expected to take place until NOVEMBER, after the rewards for the Kickstarter supporters have been processed.

The production of the screen protector is currently in progress. This could result in a slight delay of 1 to 2 weeks in the shipment of the Volla Phone Quintus if it was ordered with a screen protector.

We are also planning a matching, equally high-quality book case for the Volla Phone Quintus. We have found a German manufacturer in our neighborhood who is known for excellent leather products. He is currently working on a prototype.

A large part of our work involves adapting an operating system to our hardware. This is necessary for each new model, so that each device uses suitable device drivers with a new processor, display and many other components. In addition, we develop new features.

The beta version of the Volla Messages App includes the following features:

  • Create contacts with secure identity
  • Start secure 1-to-1 conversations with contacts
  • Create secure group conversations with contacts
  • Create secure group conversations with an invitation link
  • Exchange text messages
  • Use interactive web links
  • Exchange pictures and photos
The multi-boot feature is particularly challenging because we are implementing it for the first time for the Volla Phone Quintus with installation and execution on the internal memory. We plan to provide this feature with the November update.

Because we had to use a different display than originally planned, we had to rework the prototype twice. Finally, we found a solution to incorporate a QHD display with a modern 16:9 aspect ratio for the Volla Tablet. Due to the delay, we decided to equip the Pro Tablet with half a terabyte instead of 256 gigabytes of internal storage to compensate.

Meanwhile, the series production of the Volla tablet has started.

We therefore expect the start of shipping at the earliest at the end of NOVEMBER for the rewards of the supporters of our crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter. We want to process all further pre-orders at least UNTIL CHRiSTMAS this year and get them on their way for delivery.

Meanwhile, series production has started. Due to the revised hardware, we also had to rework the Volla Keyboard of the tablet. Last week, we were finally able to approve the prototype, so that we can now start with the mold making and then with series production. We are thrilled with the features:

  • Fold-out case with a practical stand turns the tablet into a slim laptop
  • Hardware connection between tablet and keyboard
  • Clear and modern typography of the labeling
  • Backlight in several levels
  • Extra large touchpad for high comfort
  • USB port for mouse, ethernet, headphones and more
Due to the delayed start of production, the shipment of orders with a keyboard may be slightly delayed.

We plan to start the pre-sale of both the keyboard and the Volla Pen Tiro for handwritten notes and drawings on the Volla Tablet in the next few weeks. The slim, elegant pen, which works according to the USI 2 open source standard, is an important step for the implementation of the project, which we are excited about.

With the final hardware, the development of the display protection for the Volla tablet has also begun. It will also be available in clear and matte, as it is for our smartphone models.

Some Kickstarter supporters have already selected the protective shell for the tablet as a reward. We are at the beginning of the development, but could now start with the prototype development after we have built up our own production capacities with high-precision 3D printing machines. We have chosen a selection of positive, friendly colors: light blue, light green, light purple, light gray and Volla red. Due to sick leave, we will be late in November

Meanwhile, our software teams are working on the preparation of Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch. We have something special planned for Ubuntu Touch. For the upcoming major update of Ubuntu Touch Noble based on Ubuntu 24.04, which is expected in 2025, we plan to support easy installation and use of Ubuntu desktop apps such as Firefox and LibreOffice, which turn the Volla tablet into a full-fledged Linux laptop.

And with the multi-boot function, users can once again use both operating systems on one device: Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch.

We will report on further developments with photos soon.
