1. Swipe to the right twice on the springboard to show the settings from the left side.
2. Tap on the entry "Security mode is OFF". 3.
3. Hold the touch and move the touch over the "Security mode is ON" entry and lift the touch out to select the entry.
4. A dialog box appears. Now enter a password and its repetition. If you had already set a password because you had already activated the security mode before, you can also check the box to reuse the password you used before.
5. Tap on "Ok" to activate the security mode,

1. Call up the system settings, for example by tapping the gear icon in the app overview.
2. Call up the "Security" entry and then "Security mode".
3. You will see a view with two tabs: App Locker and Firewall.
   1. For the app locker, tap one of the listed apps to block or unblock it in security mode. You can see the status by the open and closed icon of a lock. You can also use a switch to prevent apps from being installed.
   2. For the firewall, you can add new Internet addresses and domains via the button with the plus symbol To delete the entries, swipe left on them. Optionally, you can define the Internet addresses and domains as those that will be blocked or allowed in the enabled security mode.

Currently, this function is available on the Volla Phone 22 and Volla Phone X.

1. Insert a fast memory card into your Volla Phone.
2. Call up the system settings, for example by tapping the gear icon in the app overview.
3. Call up the entry "System", "Advanced" and "Volla Boot Manager".
4. If your memory card is not yet prepared and an error message appears, call up the left sidebar via the icon with the three horizontal lines.
   1. Select the entry "SD card" in the sidebar.
   2. If you see one or more memory areas (partitions), tap on them and delete them.
   3. Tap on the free memory to create a storage ready for metadata.
   4. Tap the remaining free space to create a storage area for another operating system. Select the appropriate entry from the drop-down list and confirm the parameters suggested in the dialog box.
      1. start with operating system data and confirm the suggested area size of 4.5 GB
      2. continue with OS user data and select at least 32 GB or the remaining speaker space.
      3. optionally allocate remaining space for external storage. Tap on the remaining free space to create a storage area for the user data of an additional operating system. Select the appropriate entry from the drop-down list and confirm the parameters suggested in the dialog box or reduce the size with the slider to set up a shared external storage area for the existing and additional operating system.
      4. Tap on the remaining free memory to create a memory area for a shared external memory area.
5. Now call up the "ROM" entry via the sidebar.
   1. To install another operating system like Ubuntu Touch, tap on the button at the bottom left edge.
   2. Select the entry for installing an operating system from the options, for example Ubuntu Touch.
   3. Follow the instructions of the installation wizard. You can confirm all the suggested parameters.
   4. After a successful installation, you can restart the device and the multi-boot menu for selecting the operating system will appear. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to select the entry and confirm the selection with the Power button.

Usually, the system should inform you that there is a new system update. However, you can check if your operating system is up to date at any time.

1. Open the system settings app, which you can recognize by the gear icon.
2. Call up "System" and then "Updater".
3. Tap the circle icon at the top to have the Updater app check for the availability of an update.
4. if an update is available, tap "download" and then tap "install".
   
   

Note: If you installed the operating system to the Volla Phone using the UBports installer, use a the TWRP software for recovery mode. A system update in this case will only cause the Volla Phone not to boot into recovery mode.

Proceed as follows:

1. Download the appropriate recovery mode software here.
2. Start the Volla Phone into the maintenance mode with the volume up and power on buttons pressed.
3. Select "Bootloader" from the three options in the menu that appears.
4. Connect the Volla Phone to your PC or Mac with a USB cable.
5. Open the terminal app (Linux/macOS) or command line window (Windows) and enter the command fastboot flash recovery recovery-verified.img.
6. Reboot the Volla Phone with fastboot reboot.
   
   

If you have accidentally started an update on a Volla Phone with TWRP, proceed as follows:

1. Start the Volla Phone with pressed volume up and power on key in the maintenance mode.
2. Choose "Bootloader" from the three options in the displayed menu
3. Connect the Volla Phone to your PC or Mac with an USB cable.
4. Pen the terminal app (Linux/macOS) or command line window (Windows) and enter the command 'fastboot erase para'. This will stop the update process.
5. Then restart the Volla Phone with fastboot reboot.
   
   

If you cannot download an update in the Volla OS Update setting, it may be due to several reasons:

1. There is no internet connection
2. The server for the updates is not available, for example due to maintenance work.
3. There is not enough memory available
4. The system has some other problem to save the file.

For the latter case, proceed as follows:

1. Open a menu with a long touch on the entry for the update and select the option to copy the URL.
2. Download the archive file for the update using the URL by copying URL into the address bar of a browser.
3. Copy the archive file to an SD memory card. If this is not possible on the Volla Phone, copy the file to your PC and from there to an SD memory card.
4. Switch off the Volla Phone and restart it by pressing the volume up and power on buttons at the same time.
5. From the menu that appears, select to start in recovery mode.
6. When an open Android icon appears, briefly press the Volume up and Power buttons at the same time again and start pressing the Power button.
7. Now select the option to update from the SD card, and finally select the downloaded file.

Usually, the system should inform you that there is a new system update. However, you can check if your operating system is up to date at any time.

1. Open the app for system settings.
2. Tap on the "Update" entry.
3. Tap on "Update" if one is available.

1. Enter the system settings, then "System", "Advanced" and "Volla Boot Manager".
2. Enter "ROM" in the left sidebar of the Volla Boot Manager.
3. In the Volla Boot Manager, select "ROM" from the left sidebar.
4. Tap on the entry for Ubuntu Touch and then on "Update" in the dialog window.

The Volla OS offers several ways to install Android apps. We recommend three variants:

• The pre-installed Aurora Store allows anonymous installation of apps from the Google Play Store. At the same time, the Aurora Store tells you whether and which trackers an app uses that collect data about your activities.
• The F-Droid app, which is also pre-installed, allows you to install open-source alternatives to the apps in the Google Play Store.
• The direct installation of files that you have downloaded from the Internet and end with .apk. For this, the browser needs the right to save files from the Internet to the Volla Phone and the File Manager needs the right to install apps. Use only websites of trusted vendors for downloading to protect yourself from malware.

All apps that are compatible with Android 9 and do not rely on Google Play Services. Also, apps that require extensive root privileges cannot be installed by default for security reasons.

You can still use some apps that require Google Play Services with limited features.

To protect the privacy and data of Volla Phone users, the Volla OS does not receive Google Apps and Play Services.

Ubuntu Touch uses its own pre-installed Open Store, which contains apps developed for the Linux mobile operating system.

Users experiencing difficulties with the Aurora App Store on the Volla OS are advised to check the following settings:

• Access the "F-Droid" app and drag down the content on the home page until "Package Update" appears at the top. Once the process is complete, tap the bell icon in the bottom bar and check if there is an update for the Aurora app. If there is, perform an update afterwards.
• Go to the System Settings app, which you can recognize by the gear icon. Then select "Apps and notifications", "Advanced", "Special app access", "Install unknown apps" and "Aurora Store". Finally, enable the "Trust this source" setting.
• Go to the System Preferences app, then "Apps and notifications", "Show all ... apps", "Aurora Store" and "Permissions". Finally, enable the setting for "Storage".
• If there are still problems installing an app, access the system settings, then "Apps and notifications", "Show all ... apps", "Aurora Store" and "Storage". Finally, clear the cache and memory contents. After that, you need to grant the above permissions again.

Failure to search for apps.

Aurora is becoming more and more popular. Therefore, when using an anonymous account, searching for apps may result in a notice that the number of possible requests has been exceeded (rate limit). In this case, proceed as follows:

• Access the side menu bar of Aurroa via the icon in the upper left corner.
• Select "Settings" and then "Advanced".
• Check the option to show results in a browser window.
• Now call System Preferences and search for "Link".
• Select the "Open Link" item and "Aurora Store" in the list.
• Tap on the "Add Link" button and check off "play.google.com". Finally, tap on "Add".
• Now when you search for an app in Aurora, the search result will be displayed in a browse window. Select forteineApp.
• From the menu that you open via the three dots in the lower right corner, tap "Open with App". This selection will take you back to View in Aurora Store.

Go to the System Preferences app, then "Apps and Notifications", "Show all ... apps", "File Manager" and "Permissions". Finally, enable the setting for "Storage."

Connect the Volla Phone in a switched on state with the supplied USB cable to the supplied power supply. The Volla Phone can be in standby mode or can be put into standby mode by briefly pressing the power button, which will turn off the display but not the device.

If "Bootloader" is displayed in small letters in the lower left corner after you have connected the Volla Phone to the charger, you must first turn it on and then reconnect it to the charger.

If the battery is completely empty, please proceed as follows:

1. connect the Volla Phone to the power supply for 30 to 40 minutes.
2. Unplug the Volla Phone from the power supply and press the power button until the device starts. You may need to lift your finger once.
3. When the device has started, immediately reconnect it to the power supply until the battery is fully charged again.

If the device does not start in the second step, repeat the first step.

There are several ways. Here are three variations:

Using an address book file

1. export the address book of your previously used smartphone or other computer to a file in vCard format with the extension .vcf.
2. now copy the address book file to your Volla Phone or an SD card, which you then insert into the Volla PHone. If necessary, use your PC or Mac as an intermediate step.
3. open the Contacts app and select the menu via the three dots in the upper right corner, then "Import contacts from .vcf file".
4. In the File Manager, select your address book file and confirm the import. It is important to specify "Phone" as the target contact source.
    

Online address book

1. Launch the Sync app, then tap the plus sign in the lower right corner. When you launch the app for the first time, the app will show an introduction.
2. Choose one of three methods for connecting your online address book. The prerequisite is that your online address book supports the CardDAV standard. In most cases, use "Log in with URL and username".
3. After successful login and connection to the online address book, check the box for the address book of the account you want to synchronize.
4. Tap on the synchronization buttons in the lower right corner of the view for your address book. Using the gear icon in the upper right corner, set the frequency of synchronization.

SIM card

1. Save your most important addresses from your old cell phone on your SIM card, which can hold up to 250 contacts.
2. Insert your SIM card into the Volla Phone.
3. Import the SIM contacts into the system's contact database. There are two ways to do this
   1. Use a SIM card manager app, for example SIM Contacts Manager from the Aurora Store.
   2. Open the phone app and select *#*#4636#*#*. Then select "Phone information" in the menu and "Show SIM address book" via the button with the three dots in the upper right corner. Finally, you can click the "Import all" button again.

There are several ways. Here are three variations:

Using an address book file

1. export the address book of your previously used smartphone or other computer to a file in vCard format with the extension .vcf.
2. now copy the address book file to your Volla Phone or an SD card, which you then insert into the Volla Phone. If necessary, use your PC or Mac as an intermediate step.

Online address book

Experienced users can use a script to synchronize addresses with an online address book via the CardDAV protocol. Instructions are provided in the Documentation of Ubuntu Touch.

SIM card

1. store your most important addresses from your old cell phone on your SIM card, which can hold up to 250 contacts.
2. insert your SIM card into the Volla Phone and open the Contacts app.
3. select the menu via the gear icon in the upper right corner, then "Import from SIM card".

There are several ways. Here are two variants:

Using a calendar file

1. export your calendar from your previously used smartphone or other computer to a file in vCard format with the extension .ics.
2. now copy the calendar file to your Volla Phone or an SD card, which you then insert into the Volla Phone. If necessary, use your PC or Mac as an intermediate step.
3. open the calendar app and select the menu via the gear icon in the upper right corner, then "Import appointments from ics file".
4. select your calendar file via the file manager and confirm the import.
    

Online calendar

1. Launch the Sync app, then tap the plus sign in the lower right corner. When you launch the app for the first time, the app will show an introduction.
2. Choose one of three methods for connecting your online calendar. The prerequisite is that your online calendar supports the CalDAV standard. In most cases, use "Log in with URL and username".
3. After successful login and connection to the online calendar, check the box for the calendars in your account that you want to synchronize.
4. Tap the synchronization buttons in the lower right corner of the view for your calendars. Using the gear icon in the upper right corner, set the frequency of synchronization.
5. Open the Calendar app and access the menu via the three dots in the upper right corner, followed by the "Settings" menu item.
6. Activate the CalDAV synchronization and select the calendars that should be displayed in the Calendar app via "Manage synchronized calendars".

There are several ways. Here is one way:

1. open the Calendar app and the menu with the calendar icon in the upper right corner.
2. select "Add Internet Calendar" from the menu and then select the appropriate service.
3. if you select a connection based on the CalDAV standard, then enter the URL, your username and password. Confirm your entry with the check mark in the upper right corner.

1. open the email app and there open the sandwich menu with the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
2. in the open side panel on the left, select the bottom menu item "Settings" and then "Add account".
3. The email app will now guide you through the process of setting up your email account. The IMAP and POP standard as well as Microsoft Exchange accounts are supported. The exact settings can be found on the help pages of your email provider.

1. First install the email app "Dekko 2" on the Open Store.
2. Open "Dekko 2" and then the sandwich menu with the horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
3. Select the settings via the gear icon in the upper right corner of the opened sidebar.
4. Select "Email" and "Accounts" and finally the plus sign in the upper right corner.
5. Now select one of the appropriate services you want to use for your email account.

You can find a more advanced user guide for Ubuntu Touch on the Ubports Foundation website, which continues to develop Ubuntu Touch with a community of developers.

This is done in two ways:

1. open the system settings and then select "system", "extended" and "updater". There you will find a notice about new versions of the operating system. You can check whether the installed version is up to date via the circle symbol in the upper right corner.
2. open the F-Droid app and drag the displayed start page downwards with a swipe gesture. This will cause F-Droid to update the information about the apps in the store. If there are new versions for the installed system apps, the system will alert you. Finally, select the bell icon in the bottom menu bar. F-Droid shows there apps for which there is a new version.

1. Go to the system settings and then select "Updates". There you will find new versions of the operating system as well as the system apps. Make sure that the stable channel is selected under the update settings.
2. Open the Open Store and select "Installed apps". There you see at the top position, whether and for which installed apps an update is available.

You can send and receive MMS with the Messages app. This function is available as soon as you have inserted your SIM card and activated it with your PIN code. Prerequisite is that your contract includes a data package and you are in a radio cell that supports the frequency range of the Volla Phone.

If you have problems with sending and receiving MMS, check the network settings.

1. Call up the system settings. Select "Network", "Network provider and APN" and "Access points". Now you will see two access points for the Internet and MMS. Select the latter option.
2. Enter the settings of your network provider in the form. You can usually find them on their help pages. Once the form is completed, tap the check mark in the upper right corner.
3. if you have not already done so, set the check mark for the access point for MMS.

The mobile internet connection is available as soon as you have inserted your SIM card and activated it with your PIN code. Prerequisite is that your contract includes a data package and you are in a radio cell that supports the frequency range of the Volla Phone.

Make sure that you have activated the network connection. To do this, call up the system settings and select "Network". There the settings "Mobile data" must be activated and if you are abroad also "Data roaming".

If you have problems with Internet access, check the network settings.

1. Call up the system settings. Select "Network", "Network provider and APN" and "Access points". Now you will see two access points for the Internet and MMS. Select the former option.
2. Enter the settings of your network provider in the form. You can usually find them on their help pages. Once the form is completed, tap the check mark in the upper right corner.
3. If you have not already done so, set the check mark for the access point for Internet.

1. If you are using macOS, you must first install the Android File Transfer App. This can be found on the Android Homepage.
2. Connect the Volla Phone to your PC or Mac with a USB data cable.
3. Enter the System Preferences and type "USB" in the search field.
4. Select "USB Settings" and "Data Transfer".
5. On macOS, the "Android File Transfer App" opens; on Windows, the Volla Phone is visible as a drive.
6. You can now drag and drop or copy and paste files.

1. If you are using macOS, you must first install the Android File Transfer App. This can be found on the Android Homepage.
2. Connect the Volla Phone to your PC or Mac with a USB data cable.
3. Activate the Volla Phone and log in if necessary.
4. On macOS, the "Android File Transfer App" opens; on Windows, the Volla Phone is visible as a drive. 6.
5. You can now drag and drop or copy and paste files.

The UBports Installer allows you to install the Ubuntu Touch, Volla OS and Sailfish OS operating systems on the Volla Phone. Since the app is only available in a beta version and in some cases the Volla Phone has to be unlocked first, we only recommend changing the operating system to experienced users.

The Volla OS shows the contacts that you have marked as a favorite in the Contacts app or that you have been in contact with via a call or message in the last few days.

The contacts in the Contacts app must also be stored in the phone memory. When importing from an address book file, make sure the location is "Phone".

The Volla OS offers the call of news on the springboard. Users can include additional news channels that are published in RSS format. There are two ways to do this:

1. Long touch on a link to an RSS feed in the browser to open the context menu and share with the Volla app.
2. Paste a link copied in the clipboard into the text field of the springboard or type it by hand and then select the function suggestion to add it to the news.

Atom or RDF feeds are not yet supported.

You can insert a MicroSD cart into the second slot of the sled, where you also insert your SIM card for the Volla Phone. The slot is easily recognizable by its larger width.

The SD memory card can have a capacity of up to 256 gigabytes. User tests with memory cards up to 512 gigabytes were equally successful.

A Volla Phone with Volla OS can also format the memory card. Note here that you always set up the memory card as external memory, never as an extension of the internal memory. The latter can lead to errors when running apps.

Note for Ubuntu Touch that the memory card must first be formatted on your PC or Mac according to the FAT32 standard. Otherwise formatted memory cards cannot be read by the system or lead to an unstable connection.

In some cases, the Volla Phone X displays only 8 GB instead of 64 GB of storage after the first start. You can get the full memory capacity by resetting the device to factory settings. Proceed as follows:

1. Open the system settings via the gear icon the app overview.
2. Select "System" and then "Advanced".
3. Select "Reset options" and "Erase all data".
4. Confirm "Clear all data".

You can import contacts with phone numbers you had stored on a SIM card to a Volla Phone with Volla OS to use them in Springboard, for phone calls and in other apps.

1. Call up the phone application in the app overview.
2. Enter #*#*4636#*#* using the numeric keypad.
3. In the list of menu items that is then visible, select "Phone information".
4. Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner to open a menu and select "Show SIM address book".
5. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner again to open a menu and select "Import All".
6. Now you can open your contacts application to find the imported contacts from your SIM card.

Does the Start app show only a white or black space? Do settings get lost? Here are several possible solutions:

Reset the Start app

1. Swipe down from the top until you see the gear icon in the lower right corner of the quick settings.
2. Use the gear icon to open the system settings.
3. In the system settings, select the entry "Apps & notifications", then "Show all ... apps".
4. Scroll to the end of the list and select the entry for "Volla".
5. Tap the "Force quit" button.
6. Call up the "storage & cache" entry and delete the app data.

If the Start app user interface is visible, there is an easier way:

1. Swipe right twice on the springboard so that settings pop up from the left side.
2. Call up "Reset options".
3. Now you will find various options to reset the entire app, contacts, NAmessage feeds or shortcuts.

This is probably a conflict of the saved settings for the Volla Start app, which can occur after the update. This is quickly fixed. All you have to do is reset the app.

1. Swipe down from the top until you see the gear icon in the lower right corner of the quick settings.
2. From the gear icon, go to the system settings.
3. In the system settings, select the entry "Apps & notifications", then "Show all ... apps".
4. Scroll to the end of the list and select the entry for "Volla".
5. Tap the "Force quit" button. 6.
6. Call up the "storage & cache" entry and delete the app data.

After updating Volla OS 12.1 on September 9, 2023, the first generation Volla Phone, Volla Phone 22 and Volla Phone X23 may experience the following issues depending on installed apps and configurations:

1. the display turns black after startup.
2. the display flickers and the background image is shown briefly.

If you can access the quick settings from the top edge, please proceed as described in the article about troubleshooting the Start app.

For those who can access the system settings, simply install the latest update.

For those who can no longer access the system settings have the following options:

Sideload.

Start the device by holding down the volume up and power button to enter bootloader mode. There, select the menu item "Recovery Mode" with the volume up key and confirm the selection with the master key (Volla Phone) or power on key (Volla Phone 22, Volla Phone X23). Then select the Sideload option. Now you can upload and install The Sideload archive to your PC via "adb sideload" with Android platform tools or select and install on a prepared SC card.
