  • How can I activate security mode?
    1. Swipe right twice on the springboard to display the settings on the left side.
    2. Tap on the entry “Security mode is OFF.”
    3. Hold your finger on the screen and move it over the entry “Security mode is ON” and lift your finger to select the entry.
    4. A dialog box will appear. Enter a password and repeat it. If you have already set a password because you have activated security mode before, you can also check the box to reuse the previously used password.
    5. Tap “OK” to activate security mode.
  • How can I configure the security mode?
    1. Open System Settings (for example, by tapping the gear icon in the app overview).
    2. Select “Privacy and Security” and then “Security Mode.”
    3. You will see a view with three tabs: App Locker, Firewall, and App Firewall.
      1. In App Locker, you can select apps that will be completely blocked when security mode is enabled. The system will then behave as if the selected apps were not installed. Tap on one of the listed apps to add or remove it from the apps that are to be blocked. You can see the status by the closed or open lock icon.
        1. Optionally, activate the link to microG if you want to disable the alternative to Google Play Services and thus the connection to Google services when security mode is activated.
      2. With the Firewall, you can define Internet addresses or domains whose access is either blocked for the system and all apps (exclusion list) or explicitly allowed (inclusion list) when security mode is activated. The latter option is suitable, for example, for protecting children or restricting the functions of company devices to their intended use. You can add and remove Internet addresses or domains in three ways:
        1. Tap the plus sign in the lower right corner to add a new Internet address or domain in a dialog box and confirm with “OK.” Enter the Internet address without the protocol, for example, Google.com. If you swipe right on an entry, you can delete an Internet address or domain.
        2. Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and select the entry for importing templates. A dialog box will open from which you can select groups of Internet domains, for example, those used by trackers, phishing, or malware. Check the boxes next to the groups you want to use. The Internet domains are selected in an open source project on GitHub (https://github.com/HelloVolla/security-mode-templates).
        3. Tap on the 3-dot menu in the upper right corner and select the entry for importing a list. A view of the file system opens for selecting a text file that lists Internet addresses or domains, also without protocol, separated by a simple line break.
      3. With the App Firewall, you can define apps that cannot establish an Internet connection when security mode is enabled. Tap on one of the listed apps to add or remove it from the apps whose Internet connection should be blocked. You can recognize the status by the closed or open lock symbol.
    4. Please note that the settings are not visible when security mode is activated.

  • What can I do if my device with multi boot set up no longer starts up successfully?

If the device uses a memory card for the second operating system and Volla OS no longer starts after a restart, remove the memory card and restart the device. You can then reinsert the memory card and switch to your second operating system later.

If the device uses internal memory for the second operating system instead of a memory card (such as the Volla Phone Quintus), start the device in maintenance mode by pressing the volume up and power buttons simultaneously. There, select “Normal Boot” using the volume buttons and confirm your selection with the power button.

A tip: First press the power button and then immediately press the volume up button. Release the power button immediately when you see the maintenance mode menu.

  • How can I update the operating system Volla OS?

Normally, the system will notify you when a new system update is available. However, you can check whether your operating system is up to date at any time.

    1. Open the System Settings app, which you can recognize by the gear icon.
    2. Go to “System” and then “Updater.”
    3. Tap the circle icon at the top to have the Updater app check for updates.
    4. If an update is available, tap ‘Download’ and then “Install.”
  • What can I do if I cannot download the Volla OS update?

If you are unable to download an update in the Volla OS Update setting, there may be several reasons for this:

    1. There is no internet connection
    2. The server for the updates is unavailable, for example due to maintenance work.
    3. There is not enough memory available.
    4. The system has another problem saving the file.

In the latter case, proceed as follows:

    1. Open a menu by touching and holding the update entry and select the option to copy the URL.
    2. Download the archive file for the update using the URL by copying the URL into the address bar of a browser.
    3. Copy the archive file to an SD memory card. If this is not possible on the Volla Phone, copy the file to your PC and from there to an SD memory card.
    4. Turn off the Volla Phone and restart it by pressing the volume up and power buttons simultaneously.
    5. From the menu that appears, select Start in recovery mode.
    6. When a horizontal, open Android symbol appears, briefly press the volume up and power buttons again simultaneously and start with the power button.
    7. Now select the option to update via the SD card and then select the downloaded file.

  • How can I install apps with Volla OS?

The Volla OS offers several options for installing Android apps. We recommend three variants:

    • The pre-installed Aurora Store allows you to anonymously install apps from the Google Play Store. In the Aurora Store, you will also find information about whether and which trackers an app uses to collect data about your activities.
    • The pre-installed F-Droid app allows you to install open source alternatives to the apps in the Google Play Store.
    • Direct installation of files downloaded from the Internet that end in .apk. To do this, the browser needs the right to save files from the Internet to the Volla Phone and the file manager needs the right to install apps. To protect yourself from malware, only use websites from trusted manufacturers for downloads.
  • How can I uninstall apps on Volla OS?
    1. Open System Settings.
    2. Select “Apps” and then “Show All Apps” if necessary.
    3. Select the settings for the app you want to uninstall.
    4. Tap the trash can icon.
  • Which Android apps can I use with Volla OS?

Apps that are compatible with the Android version of Volla OS can generally be installed and used with Volla OS.

Some apps use Google Play Services, which are not part of Volla OS in order to protect your privacy and data. Many of these apps can be used with restrictions. Alternatively, in most cases, you can establish compatibility by activating and configuring the open source alternative microG:

    1. Open the system settings
    2. Select “Apps”
    3. Activate microG
    4. Navigate back to the system settings overview
    5. Select ‘System’ and then “microG”
    6. You can now configure microG by activating the services that your apps require in a targeted and transparent manner.

Some apps use Google Play Integrity to verify a Google-certified stock Android operating system. Volla OS 15 and higher meets the first security level. Further security levels require certification by Google. Volla Systems is working on an open source alternative to Google Play Integrity.

Apps that require extensive root privileges cannot be installed by default for security reasons. However, you are free to root the system. Please note that this will override fundamental security mechanisms.

  • What can I do if an app that uses Google Play Services is not working properly?

In this case, activate microG in the system settings under “Apps.” You will then find an entry for microG in the system settings under “System,” which you can use to access further settings if activation alone is not sufficient.

    • Not receiving notifications about new messages when the app is closed? Then it's due to the Google Notification Push service. Activate Cloud Messaging in the MicroG settings and register the desired app.
    • The app won't start, or updates to the app are not possible? Activate Google SafetyNet.
    • The app requires your Google account? You can integrate this in the MicroG settings.
  • How can I resolve issues with the Aurora Store?

Users experiencing difficulties with the Aurora App Store on VollaOS are advised to check the following settings:

    • Check for new updates. Open the “F-Droid” app and scroll down the home page until “Package Update” appears at the top. Once this process is complete, tap the bell icon in the bottom bar and check if there is an update for the Aurora app. If available, proceed with the update.
    • Make sure you have disabled VPN or excluded the Aurora Store from the VPN connection. If you are using a VPN from Hide.me, open the Hide.me app and then its settings (gear icon at the bottom right). Finally, select “Split Tunneling” and tap on the Aurora Store to exclude it from the VPN. The VPN connection must then be reestablished.
    • If you receive an error message when installing an app, restart the app and try the installation again.
    • If you continue to have problems installing an app, go to >System Settings >Apps >Show All Apps >Aurora Store >Storage. Finally, delete the storage content. You will then need to briefly reconfigure the app.
    • If only a specific app cannot be installed and an error message is displayed, it may also be necessary to “simulate” a different device via the Aurora Store app settings. To do this, select >Simulations and a newer model.
    • Please note that the Aurora Store suggests “Google Play Services” for an update when microG is activated. This is because microG simulates the existence of Google Play Services. An update of Google Play Services is therefore not possible.
  • What should I do if I can't find an app in the Aurora Store?

If you cannot find an app on the Google Play Store in the Aurora Store, you can search for the corresponding page in the Google Play Store in your web browser and open the Aurora app from there. Prepare this link as follows:

    1. Open the system settings
    2. Select “Apps”
    3. Select the setting for the Aurora Store. To do this, you may need to select “Show all ... apps.”
    4. Select “Open by default” and “Add link.”
    5. Check the box next to “play.google.com” and confirm the activation.

    1. In the app overview, tap and hold an app icon until the Open Store opens.
    2. Tap the trash can icon in the upper right corner.
  • Can I use Android apps with Ubuntu Touch?
